About Us - "The Inn Side Story"
The Inn at Muddy Creek was originally conceived in the mind of one of the owners sometime in the early 1980's, someplace in Colorado . Rod and Vicki were vacationing and decided to stay at a Bed and Breakfast. Vicki immediately knew this was what she wanted to do, and began a dream that would not fade over the next nearly 20 years it would take to convince Rod that it was a good idea.
Pam and Randy began thinking about being innkeepers in the early 90's when they purchased the beautiful wooded property on which the inn is now located. After building their own home there in 2001, the thoughts of an inn became stronger and they began to think about forging ahead with the idea.
In the fall of 2003, these two couples, who had been friends for years, went to dinner and a casual remark at the end of the evening, led to the partnership that now comprises, The Inn at Muddy Creek, LL C.
By November, Pam had put together a floor plan, (that would change many times over the next several months) the bank had excitedly come on board the project, and the LLC was established and on it's way to making history. Amid the bustle of the Christmas Season, the two couples attended a seminar for people hoping to open B&B's and were further convinced that this was how they wanted to spend their “twilight” years.
In January, the group met with the County Planning and Zoning Board, and again were fortunate that people could see the potential for this business and heartily supported their efforts. Pam began to get bids while Randy contacted contractors, and Rod began the task of planning the electrical for the facility. During this time, Vicki kept diligent notes and learned that she was about to do some things she never imagined herself doing.
By February, things were moving along with most bids in and a groundbreaking ceremony was set for early March. The groundbreaking was attended by the newspaper and other local dignitaries and again the group saw tremendous support for the project and great excitement throughout the county for this new business.
In the early spring Randy (who with Pam, owns Serendipity Construction) brought the good news that the inn had been selected to be on the Topeka Home Builder's Fall Home Tour which would mean great exposure and an opportunity to “show off” for the masses.
Within a couple of weeks, the basement was dug, the footings were poured and the once empty meadow was taking on the shape of a longtime dream. Regular Board Meetings were held to make decisions and put out fires and both couples put in many hours beyond their regular jobs. All found out that 8 hours of sleep a night is definitely just a suggestion.
Over the summer of 2004 the inn progressed and finally they could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Although it was the wettest spring and summer in many years for northeast Kansas, work continued to progress.
During the construction phase, the female half of the LLC were busy furnishing, and (in their minds at least) decorating the inn. While their husbands thought it a bit premature, as the construction phase came to a close, all involved were glad that so many things were planned and purchased in advance. Moving day was much easier than it might have been.
Throughout the entire process the innkeepers were blessed with the support of family, friends, and community. Whenever it was mentioned the response was positive, and so many offered so much encouragement and so much help over the months of the project.
Special thanks goes out to friends and family members who gave up many hours of their time to help make this venture a success by either working at the inn, babysitting so others could work, or supplying materials or expertise to make the venture a success.
Thank you to, Mickie, Michael, Gabriel, Megan, Garrett, Stanton, Gracie, Ethan Joseph, Stacy, Ray, Dalton, Elizabeth, Shawndee, Mike, Corynn, Abby, Cole, Tammy, Jarrett, Todd, Ralph, Stan & Stephanie, and many other special family and friends.
The Inn at Muddy Creek was officially completed on September 30, 2004 , and after the appropriate inspections and licenses, opened in October 2004.
